Making It Easy for Folks to Talk About You

Sep 26th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Tips

Welcome to spinme.com, where we help working musicians make more money making music. If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed or our weekly newsletter. Thanks for visiting!

We have talked about this on more than a few calls. Audience members go for “high concept.” No matter how you’ve positioned your music, it’s always going to be easier for folks to talk about you in the context of other artists they know. Where to do you fit on the spectrum? Embrace this idea, and send it out among your street team, put it on your blog, and make it easy for your fans to spread your message.

Stop. Now. If the music is good, someone will hear it. Eventually. Don’t force it and make it commercial. Otherwise you’ll look like/sound like Asia, Boston, etc….

Why settle for “eventually?” If your music is good, it’s your duty to do everything you can to make sure that people hear it. That doesn’t make you “commercial,” and “commercial” doesn’t have to mean “bad.” Connecting with an audience is what counts.
