CDBaby + Best Buy

Dec 14th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Editorial

Weeks are flying by so fast around here, and I realize I hadn’t even weighed in on the CDBaby/BestBuy.com mashup.
Basically, if you go wayyyy down here into the cellar of their site, there’s a “Browse CDBaby” button and a “Search CDBaby” button, not unlike what CDBaby’s other partners use.
Derek Sivers is the one person [...]

Athens House Concert Venue Gets Shut Down by Code Enforcement

Dec 13th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Hosting Concerts

I wrote about this in Host Your Own Concerts, but we’ve got an example of it here in Athens, where lots of folks host house concerts, backyard parties, and tailgates with live music.
House concerts typically work best in a controlled space, where you know at least half the folks on the invite list, and there [...]

Is the iPod hurting music sales?

Dec 13th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Editorial

Why?
Why do industry experts insist on coming off as crotchety old hillbillies, sitting on the porch, talking about how “in my day, we didn’t have no dadgum eye pods. We had heavy laminate discs you had to spin around and poke with a big needle. You had to buy a new one every week ‘cuz [...]

Interview Do’s and Dont’s

Dec 12th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Classes

Without spending thousands of dollars on media training, I’ll show you how to prepare some [...]

Arctic Monkeys: Not on MySpace

Dec 12th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Editorial

Thanks to Emily and other Arctic Monkeys fans for reminding me that the band does not actively maintain a MySpace page — that page is a fan creation. Which jibes with our contention that MySpace is not quite the mighty marketing vehicle that independent musicians believe it to be…

Meanwhile, in the members area…

Dec 12th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Announcements

Even though you can peek at what’s going on in our personal music mentoring program by checking out the stripe in our sidebar, it’s always good for me to bring you up to speed on a few discussions among our musicians:

Glenn’s trying to find collaborators and bandmates in his small-ish town, and the crew’s giving [...]

Three Degrees of Rap

Dec 9th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: News

Nature reports that, despite bloodshed and intense public rivalry, pretty much every professional rapper is connected to every other professional rapper by three degrees of separation.
In fact, if you are Snoop Dogg, you are actually caught in a vortex of complex, interconnected relationships from which not even light can escape.

Guitar Lessons via Podcast

Dec 9th, 2005 | By Joe Taylor Jr. | Category: Tools

The folks at iPlay Music have a new video podcast that teaches you how to play the guitar! If you get a shiny new video iPod in your stocking this year, this can be a great way to pick up a new instrument.
