REAPER: almost-free recording software

Mar 16th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Recording and Tools

Although it’s not quite to version 1.0 yet, Reaper looks like it’s going to be killer recording shareware. Windows-only, but lots of the same features you’d expect from a pricier recording suite. I particularly like the VST/DXi support since there’s a ton of great free audio plug-ins floating around out there. (Via Brad.)

Thousands of artists use CD Baby’s digitial distribution program to get their music into iTunes, Rhapsody and other digital stores. Today, CD Baby posted a streamlined version of their DD agreement. Among the changes are: improved readability, ringtones and an easier-to-grasp term length. They’ve also removed language and items that were suggestions and not required [...]

New “Interviews” category!

I’ve got quite a few more 5 Questions interviews in the pipe, so I’ve added an Interviews category to spinme.com so you, Constant Reader, may more easily find them. Watch this space.
In the meantime, here’s a brief recap of previous posts in the 5 Questions series:

On being “real”

Mar 14th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Inspiration, Off-Topic and Tips

Seth Godin’s blog is another non-music website I think all working musicians should read. Godin has a rep as a marketing “guru” but I suspect his true talent is a keen grasp on what people really value in their lives.
Godin has a great thought-provoking post today on the value of authenticity which really speaks to [...]

5 Questions with Michael Tarlowe of Virt Records

Mar 13th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Inspiration, Interviews, Selling CDs and Tips

Michael Tarlowe started his independent label Virt Records in 2001 with a tight focus on the Triple-A and performing songwriter markets. Virt’s modest roster includes critically acclaimed artists Vienna Teng, Shane Nicholson and Brenda Weiler. New releases from husband-wife duo Ellery and San Francisco folk-popsters The Bittersweets are planned for 2006.
When I discovered that Virt [...]

American Idol no guarantee of marketplace success

Mar 11th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: News and Selling CDs

Here’s a report that American Idol finalists typically have poor record sales and that labels are hesitant to offer contracts to former AI contestants.
Of course, “poor record sales” can mean different things to different people:
Second-season singer, third-place finisher Kimberley Locke, has sold approximately 209,000 copies of One Love, but after her, the next-best loser is [...]

The power of audacity and other networking tips

Mar 10th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Inspiration and Tips

This week I finished reading Never Eat Alone, Keith Ferazzi’s book on professional networking.
There are some people who seem to be naturally adept at making connections with others; I’m not one of them. However, I personally feel that networking is totally a learned skill just like singing or playing an instrument. If you can find [...]

What is Square One?

Mar 10th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Inspiration and Tips

I’ve been reading Kathy Sierra’s blog forever now and recommend her to almost every musician I know. Funny, because she writes about software development and learning, not music. But her ideas and observations are completely applicable to just about any profession, including working musicians.
My latest favorite: Don’t forget square one, a reminder to keep practicing [...]

Audacity: free recording software

Mar 7th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Recording and Tools

Cash-strapped musicians who want to do computer-based home recording might want to look into Audacity, a totally free multitrack recording program that runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. I haven’t used it myself, but after looking at the feature list I just might give it a whirl.

Global gigging via the Internet

Mar 7th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Growing Your Audience, Inspiration and Web/Tech

If you’re weary of hauling equipment from gig to gig and pouring your money into repairs for your tour van, you can always try what Scottish singer Sandi Thom did: set up a webcam in her basement.
In a packed field of wannabe pop stars looking for exposure on the Web, [Thom] is attracting up to [...]
