Live Recording Patent Busted

Concerts

With all the internet radio and YouTube stuff happening this week, this news nugget nearly slipped by me:
The EFF managed to get a patent revoked that prevented many artists and clubs from offering quick-turnaround CD recordings of live performances. A Clear Channel subsidiary had patented the idea to make quickly-burned CDs of live performances available [...]

SellaBand: Fans Pay for Your Recording Sessions

Recording

Over the last few years, I’ve been talking to clients and members about how to get a core group of your fans to fund your recording sessions by selling pre-order copies and letting folks purchase “executive producer” credits on discs. We’ve even had folks use neat little PayPal donation meters to track their progress.
Today, I [...]

REAPER: almost-free recording software

Recording

Although it’s not quite to version 1.0 yet, Reaper looks like it’s going to be killer recording shareware. Windows-only, but lots of the same features you’d expect from a pricier recording suite. I particularly like the VST/DXi support since there’s a ton of great free audio plug-ins floating around out there. (Via Brad.)

Covers

Recording

Gerd has picked up on an interesting thread… Using the coversproject database as your jumping-off point, you cover a song by someone. Then, someone’s got to cover one of your songs. And so on.
As hard as you work on writing your own songs, never underestimate the power you can bring to breathing a different kind [...]

Concerts

Turns out, one of the biggest search phrases that land folks on this site is “what is the difference between gross and net,” which I answered flippantly before. For the benefit of newbies, here’s a quick primer in record label accounting 101:

The Creepy Side of Indie Music Venture Capital

Recording

David’s getting bizarre e-mail. Thing is, he and I (and other folks who pop our heads out on the independent music prairie) get stuff like this all the time from folks that think they can’t do any of this on their own.

As David says, any “angel investor” in your project has to see that you’re [...]
