Coaching

For over ten years, I’ve offered music business marketing coaching to clients across the United States by phone, by e-mail, and in person. In 2011, I’m expanding my coaching to emerging artist managers who want to launch their practices on sound foundations.

Coaching vs. Consulting

I spent a big chunk of my career consulting–being parachuted into an organization, running folks through some rote presentations, and flying off like Mary Poppins. Coaching works a little bit differently, for both of us.

1. Coaching is a conversation.

In today’s music business, everything’s situational. What works for someone else won’t always work for you. There’s no one right “way” to achieve success. During a coaching session, I’ll ask really pointed questions about what’s working in your music career and what you want to see more of. We’ll also touch on the things that may be holding you back. Because you’re paying a flat rate and not a percentage fee, I’m not just going to tell you the things you want to hear. We’ll talk about some serious decisions you’ll need to make and the action you’ll want to take to achieve your goals. After our call, I’ll hold you accountable through follow-up e-mail and, if you like, additional sessions.

2. Coaching builds on what we already know.

If it’s our first time in a coaching conversation, I’ll send you some pre-work to complete in advance of our phone call. It consists of a few key exercises from Grow Your Band’s Audience and More Gigs Now that will help me get to know you better before we meet. That way, we can invest our 45 minutes on the heart of your challenge instead of on small talk.

3. Coaching rewards professionals who want to invest in growth.

A 45-minute session with me costs only $97 because I know you may not be at the point in your career when you can afford to put a high-priced consultant or attorney on retainer. That’s fine, because I get the most enjoyment from working with “early stage” music business professionals with the hunger to grow their audiences and their practices. The fee includes the time I take to review your pre-work before your call, and to send you a few follow-up e-mails at 30, 60, and 90 day intervals. If you’re looking for free advice, take some time to search the archives and leave comments on articles that resonate with you.

No contract. Lots of commitment.

At one point, I only offered coaching sessions to musicians who could afford to commit to regular weekly calls over periods of six months to a year. In 2011, I set a goal to directly impact the lives of at least 1,000 music professionals. Opening up my schedule to one-off calls gives me a great opportunity to accomplish this. It also recognizes that you may have weeks of work to put in before it really makes sense for us to connect again by phone or over Skype.

I intend to provide you with actionable steps that you can use to book more gigs or to grow your management practice. If you’re not ready to turn our conversation into action, you can file the notes from our call and seek advice elsewhere. However, if you really come away from our meeting with a strong vision for your career, I would hope we could connect again in the future.

These coaching sessions book up fast.

I don’t open my coaching practice to new clients very often. Even now, you’ll probably only find a few available sessions per month on my online scheduler. This isn’t the only thing I do for a living, but I get a lot out of the work I do with emerging entertainment professionals. The sooner you check out my calendar, the sooner we can start working together.
