220,000 units not good enough for new Warner Group

The L.A. Times chronicles the impending drop of 170 artists from the roster in the wake of a $200 million cost-cutting frenzy by new president (former Uni owner) Edgar Bronfman. The article cites Third Eye Blind’s “disappointing” sales of 220,000 units. You would probably kill for about 1/10 (or maybe 1/100?) of that action, but it’s an example of the kind of disconnect an artist faces even at the major label level.

Will these artists be released outright, or will they end up in limbo, riding out their contracts until time or the cut-out bin claim them?
