Understanding “Local Max”

Seth Godin just published a blog entry that clarifies exactly what every musician experiences at some point in their career. As you move through your strategy to grow your audience and increase your revenue from music, you hit a point that Seth describes as the “local max.”

Pushing beyond the local max means losing some revenue, or some audience members. It’s another way to describe the valley between your “first audience” and your “perfect audience” that I outlined in Grow Your Band’s Audience and More Gigs Now.

As Seth points out, that valley is a scary place to be. So, most folks pull back, and stay in the comfortable zone of the local max. The few truly successful musicians that can swallow hard and move forward, make it to the “big max” point of abundance and prosperity.
