You want to know one of the key ingredients that made me who I am today? It’s that my parents let me have a TV in my room (not terribly common for a tween in the early 80s). When one of our Philadelphia public television stations picked up the syndication package for SCTV and started running it five nights a week, the show formed a load-bearing pillar in my sense of humor and my way of looking at the world.
Not surprising, then, that Pop Culture Happy Hour‘s Glen Weldon (about my age, grew up not far from me) had a similar experience. He wrote an NPR newsletter this week about how SCTV dove deeper than SNL and other sketch shows into satire about television. I love that it’s getting so much new attention this season.
