Jennifer Layton posted a great article at Indie-Music.com about the challenges that independent musicians face when playing outside the U.S.A. She covers more than the usual territory about stringing together some pickup dates in Europe and Asia — she digs deep with the help of some expats and discovers what life is like for folks like Nancy Falkow who find themselves living overseas and wanting some stage time.
My favorite sentence in the whole piece:
…she is probably the only folk/bluegrass artist on the planet who sings old-time Americana in Chinese.
This is a link-laden resource that could probably be expanded into its own book-length field guide, if Jennifer wanted to put the time into it.
