Memphis, the Independent Music Capital of the World?

According to WREG reporter Roswell Encina, Memphis may become the Independent Music Capital of the World.

As Memphis eagerly waits for MTV to announce the host of the VMA’s, the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission has laid out plans for the next two years to make Memphis the Independent Music Capital of the World. The commission plans to create a nationally syndicated television show and Internet radio station.

I just wonder if the commission can pull this one off…

    They’ll pull it off. I lived in Memphis for a while and have seen the changes they’ve made in the last ten years.

    When I was there, the city looked like Bagdad. They were also really caught up in the past success of Elvis.

    That has been slowly changing though and I think it will continue to do so.

    One more thing on Memphis… Anybody who doesn’t know about their history of independent music should take a look at what was happening in the area during the 60s and 70s. Stax, American, etc…
