Ready for the road?

May 18th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Tips and Tools

We’re having an early summer heat wave here in Seattle, and the sunny weather always turns my thoughts to…touring! Roadtripping , playing in different cities to new audiences, living on fast food and floor crashing at the homes of host bands and/or brave and generous superfans. Alas, as gas prices continue their seasonal skyward climb, [...]

Preparing your Flash website for IE7

May 11th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Tips, Tools and Web/Tech

(This post contains more web-geekery; if you’re unfamiliar with things like HTML and JavaScript, you’ll want to get your webmaster or a web-savvy friend to help you out.)
I was messing around with my website a few days ago when I noticed something strange about the Flash audio player I was using. Specifically I had to [...]

More on Flash players and visitors without Flash

May 9th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Tips, Tools and Web/Tech

(Warning: this post gets a bit geeky, so make sure you involve your webmaster if you’re unclear or uncomfortable making changes to your music website.)
Yesterday I mentioned that if you’re using a Flash music player on your music website, you should always offer your visitors a way to download the free Flash plug-in. This is [...]

Free Flash music players

May 8th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Tools and Web/Tech

For embedding streaming audio into webpages, I prefer to use a Flash music player. The main reason for this is compatibility; I don’t have to worry that the listener doesn’t have a particular audio player installed, and the Flash plug-in is installed in approximately 98% of browsers out there.
I’m not a Flash programming guru, [...]

REAPER: almost-free recording software

Mar 16th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Recording and Tools

Although it’s not quite to version 1.0 yet, Reaper looks like it’s going to be killer recording shareware. Windows-only, but lots of the same features you’d expect from a pricier recording suite. I particularly like the VST/DXi support since there’s a ton of great free audio plug-ins floating around out there. (Via Brad.)

Audacity: free recording software

Mar 7th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Recording and Tools

Cash-strapped musicians who want to do computer-based home recording might want to look into Audacity, a totally free multitrack recording program that runs on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. I haven’t used it myself, but after looking at the feature list I just might give it a whirl.

…or, make your own t-shirts

Mar 2nd, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Tips and Tools

If you’re a hardcore DIY-er you can always use this handy screen printing tutorial to make your own shirts in your basement. Hit up the local thrift and resale shops for vintage-looking tees and have at it. Nothing says “limited-edition” like a hand-screened shirt.
I love the web.

WikiRecording Launches

Feb 9th, 2006 | By Scott Andrew | Category: Recording, Tips and Tools

WikiRecording is a new site that claims to be a “free audio recording guide that anyone can edit.” Lots of useful articles on recording equipment, software, microphones and more. You can create an account to share your own knowledge as well. I love the web.
